Winter Tip #1: Go Bright in Low Light

The winter season is approaching, which means it's important to know how to make the best of riding in changing conditions. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing the best tips and tricks to keep you riding all winter long. We are starting with one of the first changes that come: shorter days.

As the sun rises later and sets earlier, your commute will likely be darker. This means you'll need to make sure you have functional bike lights and reflective clothing to ensure you can see and be seen.

Lights

If you are riding a B-cycle, each bike is equipped with a front, white light and a rear, red one that are powered on when the wheels turn. When riding in low-light conditions, be sure to test the lights by walking or riding the bike to make sure the light in the front turns on.

If you ride your own bike, or would like additional lights to use on a B-cycle, there are many different kinds you can buy. Refer to our own post about lights here, or check out Bicycling Magazine's top picks for bike lights for 2019: Best Bike Lights.

Reflective Clothing & Gear

While reflectors and bright colors should be used while riding year-round, it's even more important on these shorter days to be visible on the road. B-cycles have reflective tires and a reflector on the front basket, but take a look at Road Bike Rider's top picks for high visibility clothing and gear: 2019 Best High Visibility and Reflective Cycling Gear.

Tip: If you're on a budget, there are many things you can DIY with just some reflective tape and a little crafting, like this DIY accessory.
